Traditional Pesto is typically made with basil and pinenuts, but I created a nut-free Pesto sauce and substituted the basil for spinach. I always have extra spinach on hand and at times need to use it up before it goes bad. So if you are like me and have any leftover spinach that needs to be eaten, this makes for an easy and quick pesto sauce, especially when you need to add some extra flavor to a dish.
Nut-Free Pesto Sauce
My son has nut allergies and eating the traditional pesto sauce was not an option for him. He would avoid any type of pesto, whether it be store-bought or eating out at a restaurant. As a mom, I know how hard it is for him to watch as we ate a dish with pesto in it. So I came up with a nut-free pesto recipe that is just as good or even better than the traditional pesto and it tastes amazing! Pesto is just so tasty and versatile and I wanted him to enjoy it as much as I did. When I make the Tomato Mozzarella Pesto Skewers he can’t keep his hands off of them!

Pesto Sauce | Keto
This Spinach Pesto is good with almost anything. It’s the perfect Keto condiment. We normally keep it simple and mix it with some tomatoes and mozzarella to make a healthy snack. My kids love these as an after school snack! You can try the Tomato Mozerella Skewers, it’s a bit more fancy if you need a dish to bring to a party.
Adding this pesto sauce on top of grilled salmon adds a fresh nutty flavor to the salmon. You can use it as a sauce for keto pasta, you can use it as a spread for keto bread, and even as a breakfast condiment. Adding Pesto and goat cheese to my omelet in the morning gives it the right amount of flavor and good fat to my keto diet and taste so good! You will definitely want to give this pesto recipe a try!
How to Make Nut-Free Spinach Pesto
Here is what you need:
- Spinach Leaves
- Garlic Cloves
- Parmesan Cheese
- Lemon Juice
- Olive Oil
- Salt and Pepper
Place all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. It’s that simple!
Simple Pesto Recipe
If you are looking for an easy pesto recipe that doesn’t require a lot of work, this is it! Everything is tossed into a blender which makes for a quick sauce. You will find these ingredients at your local grocery store.
Place all of the ingredients into a blender. I use the Ninja Food Chopper Express Chop (this one is newer than the one I have) for this recipe. There is no need to chop up the garlic. Let the blender do the work! This Ninja blender (I have gotten a ton of use out of it) is small and compact making it easy to get every bit of sauce out.
Push the top to blend until creamy smooth. You may need to scrape down the sides in between pulsing to get every bit of spinach blended. If you like a chunkier pesto, pulse until you reach the consistency you desire. At this time, add salt and pepper to taste and pulse to blend. It’s that simple!
Store the Pesto sauce in an airtight container and refrigerate. It will keep up to a week in the refrigerator, but I am sure it won’t last that long!

- 6 tbsp Parmesan cheese Grated
- 1 tbsp Lemon juice
